COMING HOME
Should anybody read these explanations in alphabetical order, you'll have already seen that I've worked for years in different settings with the elderly. They're a very good source of war stories and, as with The Brave Soldier's Wife, it's the quieter, personal stories that hit you the hardest.
This is about a chap who served in World War 2 and fell in love while he was away. Although love between men was actively discouraged in the trenches, it was often inevitable in the face of such a sustained lack of female company and, according to him, far more common than is reported in the history books.
Then one day the war ended, he and his love were whisked off back to their lives, and never saw each other again. Then came the real test - readjusting and coming home to the wife who had been anxiously awaiting her love's return for the last six years.
This will be on End Of The Season, but it also features on a compilation album of songs about war.
