the cravats gigography

19th july 1977

venue - alcester grammar school

Our first gig was terrifying, We were playing at our school on speech day.
The headmaster had told all of the parents and teachers to leave beacause some pupils
were going to make a lot of noise, then the huge red velvet curtain parted and about
four hundred pupils whent absolutely bonkers screaming and shouting ,completely losing it
We played four songs, Precinct, Shut Up, Crash Barrier Dancer and I Hate The Universe,
in which we rolled around the floor and pushed things over.
The Headmaster said no group would ever play on that stage again.

We were thrilled and besides ourselves with joy.

The Cravats were fantastic-unlike anything I'd
seen or heard before -quite scary in fact. Svor Naan had ripped tights
on over his drainpipes and a ratty looking jumper and badly applied make up,
Shend looked large and menacing and Rob had longish hair and barked down the mic.
I particularly remember 'Pressure Sellers' and 'I Hate The Universe',
and getting served even though I was clearly under age.
There was one guy there who was wearing a coat hanger on his head

We had lent our equipment to the other bands, but by the time we were supposed
to play some of the equipment had been wrecked and we were not able to play.
A former Cravats member who had travelled down with us for this gig somehow had
managed to slash his wrist and had to go to hospital where he was detained for the night.

I remember doing a gig in a rock club in Taunton which had no stage
and the audience were yelling for Genesis songs. It descended into a near mass brawl.
We were driving away from the venue with our back door open, with all these Greasers chasing us
throwing pebbles. We hit the brakes and they all stopped and looked very sheepish.

(Oh! The depravity and the violence)

We arrived early and decided to check out the venue in advance. We didn't make our identity known,
but asked discrete questions. There were no advertisements and the venue staff didn't even know
who was supposed to be playing that night. It was decided to cut our losses and just go home.
We were set to drive off but a couple of us loitered up to the last moment when lots of people started arriving,
We raced to the van to report our findings and we had to bring all the equipment through the crowd to set up.
The venue manager gave us a dirty look as we had questioned him earlier about who was playing that night..
The audience had come to see us, This had turned out to be a really good gig.

The Adicts dragged us down to Ipswhich twice to play this dreadful club
and only them and about four of their mates turned up
Our van ran out of petrol in the middle of nowhere, and we had to sleep in the van
It was winter and I woke at 5am to discover frost on my sleeping bag.
Someone decided to walk off in search of petrol and discovered a 24 hour garage 50 yards around the corner!!

Oh! Happy Days.

the shend

The Adicts liked us and got us to come down again,I don't think the audience cared much though.

CRAVATS LIVE AT THE MOONLIGHT... As a fore-runner to Our Cravats eperdemic in the next issue.
we describe the live experience. What a night! What a noise! After an hour long interview
in the toilet downstairs. We awaited the roughly hewn natives of Redditch to impress
upon us their fantastic sound. The drummer, father of ten, smashed away terrified
by the sight of a bouncing Shend, Shend terrified by flu bounced.
The guitarman screams, hacks away and Richard on sax squeaked in a quizzical way.
As the set progressed it got faster, heavier, noisier, more exciting and Richard stepped down for several
songs to observe it all for himself. By the time he returned The Shend was beside himself,
the pair of them struggling to keep the bass swinging.
Until 3/4 the way through the set Shend looked buoyant + happy. Slowly he took on water
and began to sink. Angered by this he snarled more and during the last number, with a lightning

kick sent a whole stack of crates to an early grave. The drummer, totally into the spirit,
knocked a cymbal thing forward + The Shend he boot this too.
The drum set then found itself completely off the stage.
Shend hurled his medicinal fluids at us, and it was over.

Afterwards Shend lay vaguely senseless near the stairs, a beautiful maiden
mopping his brow. Had the flu got him? Is this the END FOR THE SHEND??!
STAY TUNED

This was truly bizarre, The venue was an old Victorian Music Hall a colossal place.
Small Wonder had held showcase gigs there before but somehow we had always missed out,
By the time this gig was set up Small Wonder had effectively ceased operations so there was rather less interest than in their heyday. The gig therefore rode on the reputation of The Cravats, In huge letters mounted high above the road, a sign with two words

THE CRAVATS

Ridiculous, It is very annoying that no one had a camera to record this.
There were three bands-The Cravats,The English Subtitles and The Plain Characters.
There was probably a quite respectable crowd if it had been a more modest sized venue, but this was the Music Machine, you could just make out the dots scattered around the place.

I think this relates to our second performance here.
a broken spring on my saxophone meant that some of the songs had to be dropped
a spotlight so intense as to make the sun pale in comparison it must have been purloined from a football stadium,
It was certainly unsuitable for the size of the venue, It was impossible to look forward from the stage
I had to turn my back throughout
, a very miserable gig.

After driving miles from Brighton we arrived after lunch, not that we'd had any! No soundcheck made us feel really confident after 27 years off the stage but as soon as we were hurled unceremoniously into the bright lights it was like sharpening a pencil.
Rattling through some of our classic hits even the demise of Svor's most important battery failed to phase him as Rex manly produced a new one from his knapsack of batteries. With a bigger audience than most of the ones back in the halcyon days of ponk, we had a complete and utter ball, rattling through the tunes with gusto (Although he had to leave to catch his last bus).
I Hate The Universe was the definite highlight as it hurtled on and on into noisy fuzz-drenched psychedelic oblivion as Rex and Svor set their various effects pedals to stun and let them do their damnedest. No encores as we never did them in the old days and better to play a blinder than come back on and massacre some ditty, we've always reckoned.
We loved it, the kats loved it and Darren who runs the thing loved it, 'cos he's asked us to do it all again in 2010.
See you then!

shend
