Last Sunday, Max's ex-girlfriend, Susie, rang me, sounding very distressed. After an argument with her mother, she found herself homeless. Immediately, I drove over to Taunton to bring her home to Minehead because she didn't know who to turn to.
On Tuesday, at 1.00 p.m., I took her to the council offices in Taunton. After her interview, she came out in tears. "They told me I have to get a letter from my mother giving me two months' notice to quit," she said; an impossible request because her mother would never agree. I felt so sorry for Susie.
I suggested that Susie phone a professional friend, who was aware of her unstable family circumstances. This person immediately contacted the council and arranged another interview straight away. By 3.30p.m. they had found Susie accommodation in the town; a large clean furnished room, with cooking and laundry facilities.
Susie only had £10 to cover her for the next nine days, until pay day. She needed food and toiletries, so I took her to a supermarket to buy her some basics and fresh food. This included some healthy ready-made meals. How on earth would she have managed without my help? What about those other pregnant girls who are turned away, with nowhere to go and nothing to eat? It quite upsets me to think about it..
